Badrinath History

Badrinath is full of tradition and lore that goes back thousands of years. The temple can be dated back to the period of Mahabharata. Hindu mythology holds that once Lord Vishnu slain the demon king Banasura, he searched for peace and protection. Therefore, he flew to the peaceful Badrinath valley and meditated under a Badri tree. Badri tree (Indian berry) is said to have sheltered Lord Vishnu as he meditated; thus, the name Badrinath was given to the place.

Badrinath temple alone has a history that dates back to ancient times. The mythical king of the Garhwal region, Raja Pandu, originally constructed the temple. The temple structure has been renovated several times over the years. The greatest was that by Adi Shankaracharya, a saintly philosopher and theologian, who is said to have restored the temple in the 8th century. Adi Shankaracharya is said to have also contributed to the concept of the Char Dham pilgrimage, of which Badrinath is a constituent part.

Various kings modified the temple, and the Chand dynasty of Garhwal also contributed to it. The temple was repaired and renovated repeatedly. Visit to Badrinath temple is a fundamental aspect of Hindu religion, and it has been a pilgrimage destination for spiritual seekers and devotees from all regions of India and beyond. The scriptures state that the Tapt Kund, a holy hot spring near the temple, is sacred and purifying. The existence of this hot spring, as well as other holy places, has just made the Badrinath yatra more important.
