Nageshwar Jyotirlinga is one of the twelve holy Jyotirlingas of Lord Shiva. It is situated on the Gujarat coast of Saurashtra between Dwarka and the Island called Beyt Dwarka. This temple is visited by devotees all year round in order to find blessings, peace, and spiritual power.
The temple is significant in a religious aspect. They say that Lord Shiva is already here in the shape of a Jyotiringa. The history of Nageshwar Jyotirlinga is very rich and strong. It is referred to in several ancient texts, such as the Shiva Purana and the Skanda Purana. These scriptures narrate the way Lord Shiva made his appearance here to save his worshipper against the demons.
As the legend goes, there was a very strong believer of Lord Shiva called Supriya. A demon, called Daruka, assaulted him. Giving a prayer to Lord Shiva, Supriya was fortunate enough to see him and eliminate the demon. Here it was that the Lord remained in the nature of a Jyotilinga. It is through this that the Nageshwar Jyotirlinga was formed.
Since ancient times, the temple has been known. It is presumed to be over 2,000 years old. At various times, kings and rulers donated to the construction and repair of this shrine. Many saints and sages also frequented this temple as an element of meditation and prayer.
Jyotirlinga at Nageshwar is special since the Lingam is located in the south direction as opposed to other Shiva temples whose Lingam is at the east direction. This feature is a special one that contributes to the mystery and divine nature of the temple. Worship at the shrine also takes away the fear of snakes and other dangers, and that is why most people who fear snakes come to this shrine to pray.
The temple has been refurbished many times over the centuries. The existing structure was constructed using hard stones and recent architecture so that it can receive a considerable number of visitors. Nevertheless, the initial Jyotirlinga does not disappear, and it remains the core of the temple.

It is easy to get to Nageshwar Jyotilinga. The temple is situated 17 km from Dwarka city in Gujarat. It is also well linked by road, air, and train.
The closest train station is Dwarka Railway Station, which is approximately 18 km. This is served by trains of Ahmedabad, Rajkot, and Jamnagar. Taxi and buses serve the temple at the station.
Jamnagar Airport is the nearest airport, 137km away. Jamnagar has flights to Mumbai, Delhi, and Ahmedabad—taxi and buses transport pilgrims to Dwarka and the temple, which is located at the airport.
The temple is reachable by road. There are state transport buses as well as private buses that operate between Ahmedabad, Rajkot, Jamnagar, and others. Private taxis and rental cars are also available. In addition, the highway trip provides scenic views of the seashores and towns.
One can visit Nageshwar Jyotirlinga any month of the year. Yet there are seasons when the travel and darshan are more comfortable.
The Gujarat summers are hot, and the temperatures reach above 38 °C. Thus, pilgrims like early mornings or evenings to be able to avail themselves of darshan. Water bottles and light cotton clothes are needed.
The monsoon is a source of rain and vegetation. The atmosphere around the temple is cooled down. Nevertheless, heavy rains can slow down road transport. Conversely, Darshan is pleasant in the cool air.
